blackbird

Crow's singing cousin

A blackbird is any of several species of dark-plumaged birds.

In Europe, the common blackbird is a thrush; in North America, blackbirds include grackles, cowbirds, and red-winged blackbirds.

The word also has historical uses referring to enslaved or exploited laborers, particularly Pacific Islanders forced into labor in the 19th century: blackbirding ships preyed on island populations.
