mythos

Culture's founding legends

Mythos is the body of myths belonging to a culture or group—the collected stories that explain origins, beliefs, and values.

It can also mean the underlying worldview or symbolic framework of a creative work: Lovecraft's mythos, the mythos of Star Wars.

Where myth is a single story, mythos is the larger pattern those stories form.

The word carries more weight than mythology, suggesting something foundational rather than merely collected.
