saga

Extended heroic narrative

A saga is a long story of heroic deeds, originally the medieval prose narratives of Icelandic and Norse tradition.

The word now applies to any extended account of events, especially one spanning generations: a family saga, the saga of westward expansion.

In casual use, saga often describes a drawn-out ordeal: Let me tell you the saga of trying to get my landlord to fix the heat.
