fearmonger

Spreader of dread

A fearmonger is someone who deliberately spreads alarming information to provoke anxiety or panic, often for political or personal gain.

The term is always pejorative—it implies the fear being spread is exaggerated or manipulative: Critics called him a fearmonger for his dire predictions about immigration.

The verb fearmonger and noun fearmongering follow the same pattern as warmonger and rumormonger.
