Spanish Main

Buccaneers' hunting grounds

The Spanish Main originally referred to the Caribbean coastline of the Spanish Empire in the Americas—from Mexico through Central America to northern South America.

The term later expanded to include the Caribbean Sea itself, particularly in contexts of piracy and naval adventure.

It appears most often in historical and romantic narratives: Pirates roamed the Spanish Main.

The phrase evokes an era of treasure ships, buccaneers, and colonial rivalry.
