race
Compete for first
Two words in English share the spelling race.
One word, a noun and verb, is related to the ideas of competition and speed: a two-mile horse race. I’ll race you to the field.
A channel in which something moves, often swiftly, can be called a race.
Some contests that are not about speed are characterized as races: the race to the White House.
The other race is a noun that describes a category in which people (and sometimes animals) are divided, based mainly on visual characteristics in people and on breeding in animals: The city is home to people of all races.
