anchoring

Making something stay

Anchoring is the act of securing something in place, most concretely a boat or ship using an anchor.

The term extends to any act of fixing or stabilizing: The tent stakes are anchoring the corners against the wind.

In psychology and behavioral economics, anchoring describes the cognitive bias where people rely too heavily on the first piece of information they encounter when making decisions—an initial price or number serves as an anchor that influences subsequent judgments.
