boom

Deep resonant sound

The commonest use of boom is a noun denoting something sudden and massive – either a sound (we heard a loud boom and saw smoke) or very rapid growth (housing boom, stock boom).

If something booms, it increases very rapidly or makes a loud sound.

A different boom is a horizontal bar with various functions in shipping, construction, or audio engineering.

To lower the boom is to initiate some form of punishment.
