square sail
Yard-hung ship cloth
A square sail is a four-sided sail set across a ship's mast rather than along its length.
Square sails catch wind from behind, making them efficient for sailing with prevailing winds on long voyages.
Ships rigged primarily with square sails are called square-riggers: The clipper ship carried acres of square sail.
