knarr

Norse trading vessel

A knarr is a type of Norse merchant ship used during the Viking Age, broader and deeper than the longship to maximize cargo capacity.

Knarrs carried goods, livestock, and settlers across the North Atlantic, enabling Norse colonization of Iceland, Greenland, and briefly North America.

The design prioritized sailing over rowing, unlike warships built for speed and raids.
