Erik the Red
Greenland's Norse founder
Erik the Red was a 10th-century Norse explorer who founded the first European settlement in Greenland.
Exiled from Iceland for killing several men, he sailed west and named the ice-covered island "Greenland" to attract settlers—an early example of misleading marketing.
He was the father of Leif Erikson, who later reached North America.
