quartering

Cutting into fourths

Quartering is dividing something into four parts.

Historically, it refers to the gruesome execution method of dismembering a body after hanging—hanged, drawn, and quartered.

In heraldry, quartering means dividing a shield into sections to display multiple coats of arms.

The Third Amendment prohibition against quartering soldiers refers to housing them in private homes without consent.
