polity

Form of government

A polity is an organized society with a system of government—a state, nation, or other political unit: The city-states of ancient Greece were independent polities.

The term is broad enough to cover anything from a tribe to an empire.

Polity also refers to the form or structure of government itself: The polity of the early church was decentralized.
