province

National subdivision area

A province is a principal administrative division of a country, similar to a state: the Canadian provinces, the provinces of China.

Beyond geography, province means a sphere of knowledge or activity: That's outside my province.

In British usage, the provinces refers to areas outside the capital—the regions considered less sophisticated or cosmopolitan than London.
