bureaucracy
Official procedural maze
Bureaucracy is a system of administration through departments, rules, and hierarchical authority—typically in government or large organizations.
The term often carries negative connotations of excessive procedures, paperwork, and inefficiency: We got lost in the bureaucracy trying to get a simple permit.
A bureaucracy can also mean the officials who run such systems collectively: The federal bureaucracy employs millions.
