league

Coalition of teams

A league is an alliance or association of people, nations, or groups united for mutual benefit or a common purpose: the League of Nations, the Arab League.

In sports, a league organizes teams that compete against each other: the National Football League, a bowling league.

The phrase in league with suggests collaboration, often secretive or sinister: They suspected he was in league with the enemy.

To be out of someone's league is to be beyond their level of ability or social standing.

Separately, a league is an old unit of distance, roughly three miles—still used figuratively: twenty thousand leagues under the sea.
