nation-state
Politically unified territory
A nation-state is a country whose population shares a common ethnic, cultural, or linguistic identity—the political boundaries aligning with the national community.
In practice, few states achieve this ideal; most contain multiple ethnic groups or have members of their nation living abroad.
The term appears in political science and international relations: The Treaty of Westphalia established the modern nation-state system.
It contrasts with empires, city-states, and multinational federations.
