regime

Authoritarian power structure

A regime is a system of government or rule, often with connotations of authoritarianism: the Nazi regime, the old regime.

The word can describe any prevailing system or set of conditions: a strict exercise regime, a regulatory regime.

In this neutral sense it overlaps with regimen, though regime tends toward political and institutional contexts while regimen leans toward personal routines like diet or medication.
