sultanate

Monarch's Muslim territory

A sultanate is a territory or state ruled by a sultan—a Muslim sovereign.

The word refers both to the domain itself and to the system of government: The Sultanate of Oman maintains traditional monarchical rule.

Historically, sultanates were common across the Islamic world, from the Ottoman Empire to Southeast Asia.

The term also denotes the office or reign of a sultan: His sultanate lasted forty years.
