infrastructure
Society's basic framework
Infrastructure is the underlying foundation that allows a system to function—the basic physical and organizational structures needed for operation.
Roads, bridges, power grids, and water systems form a nation's infrastructure.
The term extends to any essential framework: digital infrastructure, social infrastructure.
Politicians often promise to rebuild crumbling infrastructure, meaning neglected public works.
