people

Members of society

The noun people is used as the plural of person in most contexts, even though the words share no history.

People is, however, related to popular and population.

In addition to denoting any group of two or more humans, people is used to denote groups that share particular characteristics, as in the German people.

Even though people is a plural noun, the pluralized form peoples is also used to talk about multiple groups, each of which has a distinct identity.
