church history
Christianity's institutional chronicle
Church history is the academic study of Christianity's development over time—its institutions, doctrines, leaders, and movements from the early church to the present.
It's a standard subject in seminaries and religious studies programs: She's taking church history this semester.
The phrase also refers informally to the particular past of a local congregation: The archives contain our church history going back to 1850. (Capitalized Church History may refer to a specific course or publication title.)
