Municipal legal rule
An ordinance is an authoritative decree or regulation, especially one issued by a local government.
Cities pass ordinances governing parking, noise, zoning, and building codes: The city council approved an ordinance banning smoking in public parks.
Ordinance is sometimes confused with ordnance (military weapons), but the words are unrelated.
