materials

Substances for making

Materials are the substances or matter from which things are made: building materials, raw materials, synthetic materials.

The word often implies items gathered for a specific purpose: She assembled the materials for the craft project.

In education, materials means supplies or content: teaching materials, reading materials.

The singular material can be a noun (fabric or substance) or an adjective meaning physical rather than spiritual, or relevant to a matter at hand: material evidence.
