gouache

Matte water medium

Gouache is a type of opaque watercolor paint, or a painting made with it.

Unlike transparent watercolors, gouache dries to a matte, velvety finish that completely covers the surface beneath.

The pigments are mixed with a white chalk or gum that gives them body: She preferred gouache for its quick-drying opacity.

The word is French, pronounced roughly "gwash."
