primer

Beginner's text, perhaps

A primer is an introductory text or course covering the basics of a subject: a primer on investing, a primer on constitutional law.

The word also refers to a substance applied as a preparatory coat—primer on walls before paint, primer on skin before makeup.

In ammunition, a primer is the small charge that ignites the main explosive.

Pronounced with a short *i* for the coating and ammunition senses, with a long *i* for the introductory text in American English.
