gesso

White painting base

Gesso is a white primer used to prepare surfaces for painting, typically a mixture of chalk or gite mixed with glue or acrylic polymer.

Artists apply it to canvas, wood, or other materials to create a smooth, absorbent ground that helps paint adhere: She applied two coats of gesso before starting the portrait.

The term comes from Italian for gypsum.
