alloy

Fused metallic mixture

An alloy is a metal made by combining two or more metallic elements, typically to achieve properties superior to the pure metals alone: Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin.

Steel alloys iron with carbon.

By extension, alloy can mean any mixture that dilutes purity: pleasure without alloy.

To alloy is to mix metals or, figuratively, to diminish something by addition: Joy alloyed with sorrow.
