legionnaire

Roman army infantryman

A legionnaire is a member of a legion—historically a soldier in the Roman army, now typically a member of the French Foreign Legion or the American Legion.

The word carries associations of professional soldiering and military discipline: The legionnaires marched through the desert heat.

Legionnaires' disease, a severe form of pneumonia, was named after an outbreak at an American Legion convention in 1976.
