fortification

Building protective walls

Fortification is the act of strengthening something against attack, or the structure built for that purpose—walls, ramparts, trenches, bunkers.

Medieval castles were elaborate fortifications; modern ones are often concrete and steel.

The word extends to other kinds of strengthening: the fortification of flour with vitamins, or the fortification of wine with added alcohol.

The old fortifications still line the harbor.
