knight
Chivalric mounted warrior
A knight in medieval Europe was a mounted warrior of noble birth who served a lord in exchange for land.
The title carried social prestige and obligations of chivalry.
In chess, the knight is the piece that moves in an L-shape and can jump over other pieces.
To knight someone is to confer knighthood: The queen knighted him for his service.
A knight in shining armor is someone who comes to another's rescue, often used ironically. (Capitalized Knight is a surname.)
