grenadier

Tall hat soldier

A grenadier was originally a soldier who threw grenades—heavy explosive devices requiring strength and courage to deploy.

As grenades became less central to infantry tactics, grenadier evolved into an elite designation: the Grenadier Guards.

The word also names a deep-sea fish with a large head tapering to a thin tail, its silhouette vaguely suggesting a soldier in profile.
