march

Rhythmic military walk

March means to walk with regular, measured steps, typically with purposeful rhythm and often in formation.

Soldiers march in military parades, protesters march for causes, and bands march while playing.

The verb also has figurative uses: time marches on, and you can march someone somewhere by compelling them to go.

To march to the beat of a different drummer means to act independently of others' expectations.

The troops marched twenty miles that day.

Thousands marched in protest of the new policy. (Capitalized March is the month.)
