conscientious objector
War service decliner
A conscientious objector is someone who refuses military service on moral or religious grounds.
The term emerged during wartime conscription, when governments created formal processes for those whose beliefs prohibited killing or participating in warfare: He registered as a conscientious objector and performed alternative service.
The designation typically requires demonstrating sincere conviction, not mere reluctance to serve.
