outpost
Distant frontier settlement
An outpost is a military position stationed at a distance from the main force, typically for observation or defense: a remote outpost near the border.
The term extends to any distant branch or settlement far from a center of activity: a trading outpost, an outpost of civilization in the wilderness.
Figuratively, anything representing a presence in unfamiliar territory: The café was an outpost of hipster culture in the suburbs.
