grenadiers
Bomb-throwing foot soldiers
Grenadiers were originally soldiers trained to throw grenades, typically the tallest and strongest men in an infantry regiment.
As grenades fell out of common battlefield use, grenadier units retained their elite status and distinctive uniforms, often including tall ceremonial headgear.
Many modern armies preserve grenadier regiments as guards or ceremonial troops.
The word also names a family of deep-sea fish with large heads tapering to thin tails, sometimes called rattails.
