freedom fighter
Rebel for liberation
A freedom fighter is someone who takes up arms or engages in resistance against an occupying force or oppressive government.
The term carries heroic connotations—one side's freedom fighter is often the other's terrorist.
The difference lies in perspective: The rebels were denounced as terrorists by the regime but celebrated as freedom fighters abroad.
The phrase implies a struggle for liberation rather than conquest.
