armistice
Negotiated combat pause
An armistice is an agreement between warring parties to stop fighting, typically while negotiating peace terms.
Unlike a surrender or peace treaty, an armistice is often temporary and doesn't resolve underlying conflicts—it simply halts combat: The armistice ended the fighting but left the border disputed.
Armistice Day commemorates the end of World War I on November 11, 1918.
