peasant

Low-born field worker

A peasant is a poor agricultural laborer, typically one working land they don't own.

The term belongs to historical and foreign contexts—medieval Europe, revolutionary France, rural China: The peasants worked the lord's fields.

In modern use, peasant is often dismissive or insulting, implying someone crude, uneducated, or of low status: I'm not eating at that place like some peasant.
