lateral
Toward the side
Lateral means to the side or from the side, as opposed to forward, backward, up, or down.
A lateral move in a career changes position without advancing rank.
In football, a lateral is a pass thrown sideways or backward rather than forward.
The adjective describes anything positioned at or extending toward the side: lateral branches, lateral thinking—approaching problems from unexpected angles rather than head-on.
