Non-forward football toss
A lateral pass in football is a throw to a teammate who is parallel to or behind the ball carrier, as opposed to a forward pass.
The rules differ by code: in American football, laterals are legal anywhere on the field but risky since a dropped lateral is a fumble; in rugby, all passes must be lateral or backward.
He tossed a lateral pass just before being tackled.
