collateral
Pledged loan security
Collateral is something pledged as security for a loan—if you default, the lender takes it: The house serves as collateral for the mortgage.
The adjective means accompanying or secondary: collateral damage refers to unintended harm, especially civilian casualties in military operations.
Collateral also means parallel or side-by-side: a collateral branch of a family descends from the same ancestor but through a different line.
