body segments
Parts of organisms
Body segments are the repeating structural units that make up the bodies of certain animals, particularly arthropods and annelids.
Insects have three main body segments—head, thorax, and abdomen—while earthworms consist of many nearly identical rings.
The term appears in biology when discussing body plans and evolutionary development: Each body segment of a centipede carries a pair of legs.
