laterally

Toward the side

Laterally means toward or from the side, as opposed to forward, backward, up, or down.

In anatomy, it describes movement or position away from the body's midline.

The adverb appears frequently in sports commentary to describe sideways motion: The quarterback moved laterally to avoid the rush.

In corporate contexts, a lateral move is a job change to a position at the same level rather than a promotion or demotion.
