Sagittal describes an anatomical plane that divides the body into left and right portions.
The midsagittal plane runs exactly down the center, splitting the body into equal halves.
In anatomy and medical imaging, sagittal sections or views show structures as if sliced from front to back: The MRI includes sagittal images of the spine.
The term derives from the shape of the sagittal suture—the arrow-like seam running lengthwise along the top of the skull.
