gluteus

Seat of strength

The gluteus is any of three muscles forming the buttock—gluteus maximus, medius, and minimus.

The maximus is the largest muscle in the human body, responsible for hip extension and the power behind walking, running, and climbing.

In casual use, gluteus often refers specifically to the maximus: Feel the burn in your gluteus.

The plural is glutei or gluteuses; gym culture often shortens it to glutes.
