Cutting at angles
Crosswise means across or in a direction that intersects something else: Cut the carrots crosswise.
It describes positioning at right angles to the usual orientation or lying across rather than along: She sat crosswise on the chair.
Figuratively, to get crosswise with someone is to come into conflict with them: He got crosswise with his boss over the new policy.
