caldera

Volcanic summit depression

A caldera is a large volcanic crater, typically formed when a volcano collapses into itself after an eruption empties the magma chamber beneath it.

Calderas are much wider than ordinary volcanic vents—sometimes miles across—and may fill with water to form lakes.

Crater Lake in Oregon sits in a caldera formed thousands of years ago.

The term comes from Spanish for cauldron, which describes the basin-like shape.
