rock

Solid mineral chunk

English has three words spelled rock, two of which are frequent today.

One is the rock associated with rhythmic movement: rock the cradle, rock and roll.

It functions as both noun and verb and is also used figuratively: something that rocks a population or an institution is something that disrupts equilibrium.

Something that really rocks is something lively and enjoyable.

The other rock, a noun only, denotes a mass of stone.

In some contexts it is nearly synonymous with stone in both countable and uncountable uses.
