tarn

Small glacial lake

A tarn is a mountain lake, typically small and formed in a cirque—a bowl-shaped hollow carved by glacial ice.

The word is used especially in Britain's Lake District: We hiked up to the tarn beneath the summit.

Tarns are often deep relative to their size, with cold, clear water.
